The World’s Biggest Robotics Gathering

Thousands of competitors, researchers and students from around the world gathered in Incheon on Thursday for RoboCup 2026, allegedly the world’s largest robotics and artificial intelligence competition.

Footage shows teams making final checks before their matches, with humanoid robots on display, taking part in football games and carrying out tasks such as serving drinks.

The week-long event is being held at Songdo Convensia from June 30 to July 6, bringing together more than 3,000 participants.

Robots Face Real-World Challenges

Competitions include the Soccer League, Rescue League, Home League and Industrial League, with teams testing robots in everything from fast-moving matches to practical, real-world tasks.

Min Jung Lee, a graduate student researching robotics, said the event offered a close look at how far the technology has come, and how much work still lies ahead.

“I think the technology is still very challenging, and there’s still a lot of room for further development,” Lee said.

Aiming to Beat Human Champions

Zofia, a member of team ‘Whirlwind’ competing in the middle-size category, said her team had opened strongly with an 8-1 win.

“Right now, we are improving our goalkeeper behaviour because our upcoming match will be a little harder and we really want to be sure that we can stop the balls,” she added.

This is the first time South Korea has hosted RoboCup.

Founded in 1997, the competition has an ambitious long-term goal: to develop a fully autonomous robot football team capable of beating the human FIFA World Cup champions by 2050.
