Mount Etna Erupts

Mount Etna erupted on Monday, sending bright orange lava flowing down the volcano’s slopes in Sicily as fresh volcanic activity lit up Europe’s most active volcano.

Lava Flows Continue

Footage captured on Tuesday shows glowing streams of molten lava descending the mountainside, captured from the ground and by drone. Hikers are also seen walking near the lava flow through the rugged volcanic landscape.

The eruption is part of an ongoing phase of volcanic activity that began in June, according to reports. A new effusive vent opened near the Voragine summit crater in late June, feeding lava flows across the upper slopes, while scientists continue to monitor intermittent explosive activity and ash emissions.

Scientists Monitor Activity

On Friday, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported that lava had started flowing from Mount Etna’s eastern side.

Mount Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes. It entered a new eruptive phase on January 1, 2026, when lava began emerging from a fissure in the Valle del Bove, according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
