Clipped to safety cables and edging along narrow planks bolted into a sheer cliff face, young hikers are flocking to one of China’s most dramatic mountain trails in search of a break from modern life.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows visitors wearing helmets and harnesses as they navigate the Yuannao Path, a route carved into the cliffs of Dajian Mountain in Sichuan Province. Some crouch beneath a narrow rock overhang, while others move carefully along exposed ledges suspended high above the valley below.

“For us young people, it’s not terrifying; it’s actually quite thrilling and exciting. Most parts are very steep,” said visitor Zhou Jie.

The route lies along the ancient Shu Dao, a 2,000-year-old network of mountain trails that once connected China’s heartland with Sichuan. Today, it is attracting young travellers seeking adventure and a temporary escape from the pressures of city life.

“The experience of the Yuannao Path is varied. There are smooth sections and intense parts, making the fluctuating feelings quite enjoyable,” said Gu Ming.

Aerial footage shows the trail snaking up the towering cliff side, revealing the scale of the challenge facing climbers.

“The scenery is beautiful and worth it. Your heart rate definitely goes up, but the view at the top makes it all better. You can take great photos here,” Gu added.

The Yuannao Path is located within the Jianmen Pass Scenic Area, where visitors can earn free admission by reciting Li Bai’s famous poem The Hardships of the Shu Road instead of paying the standard entrance fee.

Built into the face of Dajian Mountain, which rises to around 1,200 metres above sea level, the route features exposed sections just 30 centimetres wide and drops of up to 500 metres. All climbers must pass a health screening before setting out on the cliffside trek.
