Riots Erupt Across Belfast

Burning cars and fires were seen on the streets of Belfast on Tuesday night, as riots were seen over the ‘attempted beheading’ – a stabbing by a Sudanese migrant which sent shockwaves throughout the UK.

Footage shows Northern Ireland and Union flags prominently displayed as dusk approaches, with the burnt out shell of vehicles seen and firefighters and riot police deployed.

On Tuesday, demonstrations were seen and barricades set alight by masked protesters and reported attacks on properties and businesses owned by minority ethnic groups. Buses and other vehicles were seen torched in the city, before riot police moved in to disperse the demonstrators.

Details of the Stabbing Incident

Footage posted on social media showed aknife-wielding attacker slashing at the head and neck of his victim. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the attack as ‘sickening’.

A 30-year old Sudanese national was arrested and police noted that there is currently no evidence that Monday’s attack was terrorism-related.

Police said the suspect had travelled from Sudan to Paris, and then to Dublin, before taking a bus to Belfast in February 2023 – and claiming asylum, where he was given right to remain.
