A baby swap incident at a hospital in Malaysia has shocked many families after two newborn babies were accidentally placed with the wrong mothers at a hospital ward in Kuala Lumpur. The incident happened at Tunku Azizah Hospital (HTA), one of the country’s major public hospitals for women and children.

The case became widely discussed after one father shared his experience online. He said nurses questioned whether his child was really a girl, causing confusion and concern among family members. The father later discovered that another baby had been mistakenly brought to his wife’s ward bed.
Hospital Responds Quickly
Hospital director Dr Shamsul Anuar Kamarudin confirmed that immediate action was taken after the mistake was discovered. According to the hospital, both babies were safely returned to their correct families soon after staff realised the mix-up.
Dr Shamsul said the hospital explained the situation to the affected families and provided support during the process. He also stated that early checks found no medical procedures or breastfeeding incidents that could have placed the babies in danger during the accidental swap.

The hospital added that patient safety remained the main priority throughout the incident. Staff members followed emergency procedures to ensure the babies were safely reunited with their mothers as quickly as possible.
Internal Investigation Underway
Tunku Azizah Hospital has now started an internal investigation to understand how the incident happened. Hospital officials said they are reviewing current procedures inside the maternity ward and checking whether safety steps were properly followed by staff on duty.

Dr Shamsul explained that the investigation will help identify weaknesses in the hospital’s system. He said stronger internal control measures will be introduced to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
The hospital also acknowledged public concern after the story spread online. Many parents expressed worry about safety procedures involving newborn babies in hospitals.
Families Receive Support
Despite the confusion and emotional stress caused by the incident, both families are reported to be safe and stable. Hospital officials thanked the families for their cooperation and understanding during the investigation process.
HTA said it remains committed to protecting patient safety and improving healthcare services for families across Malaysia. Authorities are expected to release more information once the investigation is completed.
