Multiple Injuries Reported In Modena

Eight people were injured, four of them seriously, after a car travelling at high speed ploughed into pedestrians in the centre of the northern Italian city of Modena.

Footage from the scene shows a shattered, bloodstained shop window following the collision, while police officers work inside a cordoned-off area.

Emergency Services Arrive Quickly

“I heard a huge crash and then saw the storefront window like this. Then there was a woman there, and fortunately the ambulance arrived within just a few minutes,” said a local retail employee.

“It was really a disaster. I didn’t even know there were other injured people further back at first. I thought it was an accident, honestly. I thought someone had just taken the turn badly, but instead it turned into a disaster,” she continued.

Suspect Accused Of Stabbing Attempt

Police said the driver, a man in his 30s, had been arrested. He is also accused of attempting to stab a passerby who tried to stop him from fleeing the scene after the collision.

Officials Condemn Serious Incident

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the incident as ‘extremely serious’ in a post on social media, expressing her condolences and support for the injured and their families while thanking bystanders and law enforcement officers who intervened to stop the suspect.

Modena Mayor Massimo Mezzetti also said the incident “is an extremely serious act, whatever its nature,” adding that if it turns out to have been a premeditated attack, it would be even more serious.
