FIFA officially took control of the Akron Stadium in Guadalajara on Thursday as the venue enters the final stage of preparations less than a month before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
Footage shows the constant movement of heavy machinery, workers and technical staff at the venue. Footage also captures the installation of temporary structures, alongside ongoing modernisation across VIP zones, hospitality areas, and technological security and monitoring systems.
The World Cup venue is undergoing an accelerated series of renovations and strategic upgrades aimed at turning it into one of the tournament’s key hubs in Mexico.
One of the most significant changes to the pitch is the complete replacement of the grass with a hybrid system that combines natural turf with synthetic fibres inserted into the ground. This design improves resistance to wear and changing weather conditions. It also enhances surface stability and playing quality throughout the tournament while reducing injury risks for players.
Thanks to these upgrades, the pitch has recently obtained the FIFA Quality Pro certification, a distinction awarded for surfaces that meet the highest standards of quality and sporting performance.
In the surrounding areas, multiple access points and parking facilities have been modified to accommodate operational modules, accreditation centres, and designated spaces for security coordination and international services. These adjustments are intended to streamline the movement of thousands of fans expected to arrive in Guadalajara for the World Cup matches.
With these developments, the Akron Stadium is being positioned as one of the most modern and strategically important venues of the 2026 World Cup, reinforcing Guadalajara’s prominence as one of Mexico’s key host cities during football’s ultimate global tournament.
