Spain Honours UN Rights Rapporteur Amid Gaza War Debate

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez awarded United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, Commander’s Cross of the Order of Civil Merit at the La Moncloa government complex in Madrid on Thursday.

Francesca Albanese, an Italian jurist appointed by the UN Human Rights Council, serves as Special Rapporteur on the Palestinian territories.

She has repeatedly called for accountability over civilian casualties and alleged violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza.
Spain Maintains Critical Position on Gaza Conflict
The meeting comes as Spain maintains one of the most critical positions within the European Union on the Gaza conflict, calling for an immediate ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access.

The Israel-Hamas war erupted on October 7, 2023, after the movement staged attacks, resulting in the deaths of 1,139 people, mostly Israeli civilians, and the capture of over 200 others. In response, the Israeli military launched an extensive military campaign in Gaza, involving airstrikes and a ground incursion, leaving 72,601 Palestinians dead and 172,419 others injured at the time of publication.
