A South Korean reservoir is currently attracting people because it was featured in a recent horror movie. Salmokji Reservoir, which was built in 1982 in Yesan, South Chungcheong Province, was initially constructed to provide water to the surrounding farms. This was, however, known by the locals over time as a site associated with paranormal occurrences and reported sightings of ghosts.

The reservoir is also known to be involved in ghost stories and even in the horror talk show, Midnight Horror Story, which discussed ghost stories and featured the reservoir. It is due to these factors that it has already drawn the attention of those who are interested in the supernatural. Recently, that interest has picked up again following the release of ‘SALMOKJI: Whispering Water’ set at the same location.
Real-Life Attraction
The movie was filmed on-site at the real reservoir and directed by Lee Sang-min, with Kim Hye-yoon and Lee Jong-won in the roles. Since its release, the film has received significant attention, particularly from young audiences. The film has had more than 1.9 million viewers, and this indicates its increased popularity.

This has seen an increased number of people flock to the site as they see fit. Pictures were captured on the internet and in apps used for navigation, showing as many as 100 cars traveling to the remote reservoir as late as 3 a.m. What was once a peaceful and remote place is now receiving some unlikely late-night guests.
Box Office Success
Simultaneously, social media has contributed to further popularizing the trend. The same way people post photos, videos, and their experiences on the internet, others become curious and decide to visit too. Some have even called this increasing trend the Salmokji syndrome, where individuals have developed a need to visit the location either because they have seen it online or in the movie. The trend closely relates to the fact that the movie has a strong box office performance, which has significantly contributed to the high levels of attention that are being directed at the movie.
