In Sri Lanka, 22 monks were arrested at an airport after the police found 110kg of cannabis in their luggage. The group came into the capital, Colombo, on Saturday, April 25th when the customs officers performed their inspections and discovered the drugs.

Customs officials reported that each monk was caught in possession of 5kg of cannabis, a very strong form of cannabis called Kush. The drugs were hidden in their luggage in false walls, which were difficult to detect initially. The packages were also concealed among other things like school supplies and sweets.

Detained After Returning From Trip

Most of the monks, who were mostly students, had been returning to Thailand. They were reportedly given a four-day trip at full expense, by an unknown benefactress. Nonetheless, the state of affairs cast some doubt on them once they arrived at the location, which resulted in additional scrutiny of the authorities.

As it was found out, one of the monks who did not participate in the trip instructed the group that the parcels were donations. According to the acting police spokesman, he had earlier informed them that a van would later pick the packages.

Evidence Found During Investigation

In the investigation, the Police Narcotics Bureau of Sri Lanka had searched the mobile phones of the monks. Photos and videos were allegedly discovered with them enjoying their vacation, as they were clad in casual outfits as they spent their time in a foreign country. These discoveries contributed to the investigation that was going on.

All 22 monks were taken to court on Sunday, after they were all arrested. They have since been detained seven days at a time as investigations are made. The police are trying to find out the complete information regarding the case.
