The UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) announced that three peacekeepers from the Indonesian armed forces were killed by a shell fired from an Israeli tank, following an investigation.
The peacekeepers lost their lives in two incidents, one on March 29th and another one on March 30th. They lost their lives while bravely, implementing their mandates and peacekeeping duties as part of UNIFIL, said a UN Spokesperson.
Peacekeeper Farizal Rhomadhon, 28, was killed after a projectile exploded. A day later, two more Indonesian peacekeepers, Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, 33, and Muhammad Nur Ichwan, 26, were killed after an explosion struck a UNIFIL logistics convoy in southern Lebanon.
According to UNIFIL, analysis of the impact site and recovered shrapnel confirmed that the projectile was a 120mm shell fired from an Israeli Merkava tank, launched from the east toward the town of Taybeh, in Southern Lebanon
Attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of both international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006) and may amount to war crimes.
Indonesia has received the bodies of the three UN peacekeepers on Saturday, 4 April. They were carried on the shoulders of uniformed officers for a ceremony attended by President Prabowo Subianto.
The three peacekeepers were posthumously awarded the UNIFIL and Lebanese Armed Forces Medals in recognition of their dedicated service to UNIFIL mission in South Lebanon.
