Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi hosted the British rock band Deep Purple in Tokyo on Friday after claiming to be a longtime admirer of the band.
Footage shows Takaichi meeting and shaking hands with the band members and gifting Japanese-made TAMA drumsticks to drummer Ian Paice. The band’s singer, Ian Gillan, thanked the prime minister for hosting them.
“You’re a drummer, we are friends,” Paice told the Japanese Prime Minister, to which she replied, “You are my GOAT.”
The prime minister shared that she’s been a devoted Deep Purple fan for over fifty years.
She stated that in elementary school, she was already listening to Machine Head, the band’s 1972 release featuring iconic tracks like Highway Star and Smoke on the Water.
She stressed that the promotion of cultural content is one of the key areas of her government’s growth strategy.
