Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Chairperson Arif Satria said that his country’s partnership with Russia was key to a ‘space ecosystem’ there, speaking on the sidelines of the Russian Space Forum in Moscow on Thursday.

“Now we are planning to establish a spaceport in Biak Island. And of course, one of the best technologies in space is Russian. So we need to have the collaboration with Russia to enhance our capacity in creating the space ecosystem in Indonesia,” he said.

Myanmar Space Agency Director General Soe Myint Maung said Russia’s main draw was how it welcomed others into the space industry – including its own space station, set for later this decade.

“They are making a new space station in Russia. And also, Russia welcomes other countries to participate in this station. <…> Also, they have welcomed our country to raise our space development and space capabilities. They are sincere, they are kind, [pay] attention to our development,” he added.

The Russian Space Forum is taking place as part of Space Week and marks the 65th anniversary of the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin. The event aims to define the strategic agenda for the industry and strengthen international co-operation in the peaceful exploration of outer space.
