Thousands of Venezuelans took part in the ‘March for Peace’ on Thursday, led by Venezuela’s Interior and Justice Minister Diosdado Cabello, marking the 20th anniversary of the Organic Law of Communal Councils in Caracas.
Footage shows Cabello greeting marchers in a festive atmosphere, as crowds marched through the streets waving Venezuelan flags and holding signs in support of captured president Nicolas Maduro.
“Today marks 20 years since the enactment of the Law of Communal Councils, which is the real beginning of the communes. Venezuela is the model of participation and protagonism of the people,” said Cabello.
The mobilisation moved along major avenues of the capital and was part of a nationwide day in support of the community organisation model promoted by the government.
At the event, Cabello praised the Venezuelan people’s commitment to peace, which he claimed remains a core value despite what he calls continued attempts by the opposition to destabilise the country.
“We march for peace, because it is a consolidated value achieved through effort. It belongs to all Venezuelans,” said the minister.
The minister praised acting president Delcy Rodriguez for her diplomatic efforts, but warned that many opposition members continue to engage in dialogue that is counterproductive for the country.
“We have always bet on dialogue. President Delcy has sat down with them, given them the right to express themselves however they wish to do so, but we always keep in mind that these are the sectors that acted against Venezuela,” Cabello added.
Cabello reaffirmed that Venezuela remains firm in the defence of its peace and sovereignty.
