Starmer says Britain’s not involved… Britain IS involved! – Fmr Labour leader Corbyn slams UK for ‘complicity’ in ‘bombs dropped on hospitals, schools’ in Iran
Former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn – and UK PM Sir Keir Starmer’s predecessor – accused Britain of ‘complicity’ in the bombing of Iran’s schools and hospitals, speaking from London on Thursday.
“Starmer says Britain’s not involved. Britain is involved. We’re providing the bases by which the bombardment takes place. Starmer belatedly stood up in Downing Street surrounded by Union flags to claim that it was not our war, as he said, and Britain was not involved, as he said. Well, I’m sorry, that is complete and utter nonsense,” he said.
“Britain is involved. Raf Fairford is being used as the base from which the US bombers take off, and also Diego Garcia is being used as a base for the bombers to take off. So if you provide somewhere for the bombs to be loaded onto the planes to be dropped on the hospitals, the schools, the roads, the railways and the factories and everything else in Iran, you are complicit. You are involved.”
Corbyn is a staunch critic of the Iran war, saying the “attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States are illegal, unprovoked and unjustifiable” and adding that: “peace and diplomacy was possible… instead Israel and the United States chose war”. He also accused the pair of behaving like ‘rogue states’, had ‘jeopardised the safety of humankind’ and called on the UK to ‘condemn this flagrant breach of international law’.
Starmer himself has warned that he won’t let the UK get ‘dragged in’ to Iran, provoking anger from US President Donald Trump – who said the PM had only offered to send two ‘broken down’ aircraft carriers when the war was ‘won’.
However, Starmer did allow the US to use British bases after the initial assault for ‘defensive’ reasons, and Corbyn attacked him for allowing Britain to be ‘involved in yet another illegal war’ – referring to another former Labour PM Tony Blair’s support for the Iraq war in 2003.
