The Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council announced on Tuesday the killing of the Secretary-General of Iran’s National Security Council, Ali Larijani, after he was targeted in an Israeli strike.
Archive footage shows scenes of Larijani delivering several speeches to his supporters, as well as visiting a number of locations.
In a statement, the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council said that he “spent his life in the service of Iran’s progress and the Islamic Revolution,” and that he “attained the honor of martyrdom alongside prominent leaders and martyrs such as Ali Khamenei, Hassan Nasrallah, and Qassem Soleimani.”
The Israeli army had announced on Tuesday that Larijani was assassinated along with the commander of the Basij forces, Gholam Reza Soleimani, during an airstrike on the capital, Tehran.
Ali Larijani is considered one of the most prominent political figures in Iran. He served as Speaker of Parliament between 2008 and 2020, previously held the position of chief nuclear negotiator, and was among those who defended his country’s right to enrich uranium.
He was also known for his close relationship with the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and for holding sensitive positions, including Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council, which strengthened his standing within the ruling establishment.
