China has already revealed a significant shift in its trade policy with Africa. Beginning May 1, the nation will lift the import tariffs on those goods entering the country of 53 African countries.

Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, announced the decision in a recent announcement that was reported by Chinese state media. The relocation will enhance economic links between China and African nations and simplify trade and reduce the cost.
Another Policy to be Expanded is a Trade Policy
The current position of China was to grant 33 African countries free tariffs to export goods to its market. The policy has now been extended to an almost continentwide one. It implies that agricultural goods, minerals and manufactured products of these nations can get into China with no additional tax expenses.
To the African exporters, this will bring about new prospects and also ease the access to one of the largest consumer markets in the world.

The new policy will however not cover one country. The African country of Eswatini is also not part of the accord. This is the case that relates to its diplomatic relations with Taiwan. China views Taiwan as its territory and highly obstructs nations which have official relations with Taiwan.
Trade between China and Africa continues to increase
Economic relations between China and Africa were growing rapidly during the last ten years. As the recent statistics show, the trade between China and African states was approximately 222 billion in early 2025.
Experts opine that this figure might increase further after the tariffs are eliminated, as the products of the Africans will gain competitiveness in the Chinese markets.

Most of the African economies are dependent on exportation of natural resources, agricultural products, and raw materials. Reduced trade barriers would enable such industries to sell more and target other consumers in China.
Simultaneously, Chinese firms can also develop their supply chains by buying more products from African suppliers.
Changing Global Trade Environment
The new policy is at a time when the world is facing a shift in trade relations. Recently, the United States has increased tariffs and trade regulations on some countries in Africa. Consequently, other governments are seeking alternative trade partners that provide open market access.

This decision of China can thus have a strategic role of enhancing its influence in Africa. Beijing wants to strengthen its economic relationship with the continent and invites more collaborations in the future by providing tariff-free access to its large market.
With the policy coming to force in May, businesses in Africa will be on high alert. To the exporters, the elimination of tariffs would open up new horizons and enhance the trade between the two regions and this might alter the economic relations of China and Africa in the coming years.
