The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released footage of what it said was an alleged American oil tanker being targeted in the northern waters of the Gulf.
The video shows successive explosions on the tanker, which was engulfed in flames, while a voice heard in the background is heard saying: “Destruction of an American oil tanker in the northern Gulf.”
According to media outlets, there were two strikes on foreign vessels. They were identified as the US-linked Safesea Vishnu and the Zefyros, owned by a Greek firm. Iran reported ‘underwater drone attacks’.
The US had not commented. One person was reported killed and another 38 people were rescued after an incident near Iraq’s port of Umm Qasr,
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran responded with strikes on Israel and US assets in the region, with explosions reported in countries right across the Gulf.
The US and Israeli military action came after a number of rounds of talks between the Americans and Iranians.
It has seen soaring worldwide energy prices and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz – which handles 20 per cent of global oil traffic.
