In a country where many households have bidets, finding one in a public toilet is far less certain. For Jeff, a Singapore-based mechanical engineer and founder of Neró Lux, that inconsistency became a recurring frustration.
Like many Singaporeans who prefer water-based cleaning, he often found himself searching for a spray hose in public toilets — sometimes in offices, malls, coffee shops, or MRT stations — only to realise there wasn’t one.
That experience later extended overseas during work trips.
“If you’re used to washing with water, it’s something you start to notice very quickly,” Jeff said. “You walk into a toilet and instinctively look for a bidet. Most of the time, there isn’t one.”

Even when a built-in hose is available, it doesn’t always feel reassuring.
“Sometimes the spray hose is left on the floor, or you’re sharing it with thousands of other users daily. It makes you think twice,” he added.
Instead of accepting that discomfort, Jeff decided to engineer a solution. The result is Neró Lux, a patented portable bidet that recently launched on Kickstarter and surpassed 300% of its funding goal.
Solving a Common ‘Bidet Hunt’ Struggle in the Nation
A Singapore woman’s frustrated search for a working bidet at Our Tampines Hub recently went viral, sparking widespread discussion online about public toilet hygiene and accessibility. In her video, she recounted visiting multiple toilets before finally finding one with a bidet — a struggle many viewers related to.
The clip highlighted the inconsistency of bidet availability across Singapore and prompted some to carry portable bidets themselves, underscoring the practical need for convenient, water-based personal hygiene solutions like Neró Lux.
Not Just Another Portable Bottle
Jeff explains that the project did not begin as a commercial ambition, but as a personal problem.
“I tried existing portable bidets. Most were either underpowered or felt cheaply made. As an engineer, I felt the category lacked proper design thinking.”
Through user surveys, another issue surfaced — water cleanliness.

Many travellers and users expressed concern about filling a device with tap water from unfamiliar sources. Jeff realised that while portable bidets existed, none addressed the hygiene of stored water inside the device itself.
“That’s when it became more than just portability,” he said. “It became about engineering a complete hygiene solution.”
Engineering Real Pressure in a Compact Form
One of the main challenges was balancing pressure, tank size, and portability. Most portable bidets require compromise — stronger pressure often means a bulkier motor or larger battery.
Instead, Jeff focused on optimising the internal water pathway to minimise pressure loss and improve flow efficiency. A laser-cut stainless steel nozzle was developed to produce a focused, consistent stream rather than a scattered spray.

The 300ml tank was intentionally chosen — enough for a proper wash while remaining compact for everyday carry.
“It’s not about carrying more water,” Jeff explained. “It’s about using it efficiently.”
Integrated UVC for Added Peace of Mind
To address concerns about stored water, Neró Lux integrates a built-in UVC system designed to support water cleanliness inside the tank.
“When you’re filling from a public sink or an unfamiliar source, there’s always some uncertainty,” Jeff said. “We wanted to provide peace of mind without complicating the experience.”

The engineering challenge involved ensuring safety and containment. The tank is designed to fully block any UVC exposure to the outside, while calibration ensures effective irradiation within a short cycle time.
Lab tests demonstrated up to 99.99% reduction of three common waterborne bacteria — E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa — within 60 seconds.
“At that point, it was no longer just a travel accessory,” Jeff said. “It became an innovation worth protecting.” Neró Lux is now patented and production-ready.
Designed for Everyday Use
While inspired by public toilet frustration, Neró Lux was designed for broader use — from daily commuting and travel to postpartum recovery and users requiring gentle pressure control.

The device features two spray modes with three adjustable speeds each, including a gradual ramp-up to avoid sudden pressure shock. A single-button interface keeps operation intuitive.
“It shouldn’t feel technical,” Jeff said. “It should just work.”
From Frustration to Global Backing
Unlike many concept-stage crowdfunding launches, Neró Lux went through multiple functional prototypes and design-for-manufacturing validation before going live.
The Kickstarter campaign has since exceeded 300% of its funding target, drawing support from backers who resonate with the familiar “bidet hunt” experience — in Singapore and beyond.
For Jeff, the mission is practical.
“If water is our standard for handwashing, it makes sense for personal hygiene too,” he said. “The goal is simple — make water-based cleaning accessible anywhere, without depending on what the toilet provides.”
