Local villagers and amateur mechanics in the mountainous town of Yanla, Anshun, in China’s Guizhou province, staged Village GT, a grassroots motor racing event designed to give ordinary car enthusiasts a chance to experience high-speed drifting.
Footage filmed on Tuesday shows cars, including modified ones, drifting across the track with clouds of tyre smoke as spectators watch from the sidelines.
“I think it’s remarkable because, in the past, we only ever saw this kind of racing event on television. Now, we can actually watch such an exciting and impressive competition right on our own doorstep,” shared Xiao Zhang, a visitor.
Zou, one of the event organisers, explained, “The origin of Village GT is rooted in the grassroots and a pure love for cars,” adding, “We simply want to lower the entry barrier for the expensive sport of motor racing, so that more car enthusiasts can participate and feel the joy that car sports bring them.”
Village GT is the third instalment of Guizhou’s ‘Village sports trilogy’, following the viral success of Village BA basketball and the Village Super League football competition.
“The biggest challenge we face with this event is ensuring the safety of every spectator and every driver. Safety is the top priority. It’s not simply about letting the drivers have as much fun as possible,” Zou noted.
He concluded, “In the future, we hope to make it even better and lower the entry barriers further, so that more drivers and more people who love motorsport can get involved.”
The competition includes modified domestic cars, home-built go-karts, and improvised buggies. Organisers intend to grow the series while maintaining its grassroots character.
