Hundreds of residents and visitors poured into New York City’s snow-covered streets and parks on Monday, embracing the blizzard as it transformed the city into a winter playground, complete with impromptu snowball fights and frosty fun.

Footage shows thick layers of snow blanketing Times Square, covering avenues and cars, as locals trudge through drifts to cross intersections, and crowds gather to embrace the rare mid-winter snowstorm. In Washington Square Park, locals and visitors are seen building snow figures and taking part in playful winter games.

“It’s so cool. It’s our first time in New York, and really, the city is so beautiful with the snow,” one visitor said. “It’s not too cold. We love it.”

“It’s just beautiful. Three days later, I’m not going to like it, but now it’s just a beautiful morning,” shared a resident.

A powerful winter storm dumped more than 50 cm of snow on parts of the city, bringing daily life to a standstill as heavy, icy flakes blanketed roads, sidewalks and landmarks across the US Northeast.

New York’s Central Park recorded nearly 20 inches (51 cm) of snow, according to the National Weather Service, while Providence saw 33 inches (83 cm), breaking its previous single-storm record set in 1978.

The storm severely disrupted transportation, with city officials imposing a ban on non-essential travel until midday Monday. Air travel across the region was also heavily affected, with more than 10,000 flights cancelled between Saturday and Tuesday.
