In Taipei, an appalling family conflict rocked the world when a 102-year-old millionaire was snatched away by his own children after having married his much younger nurse in secret. The CCTV shot on the dramatic scene has now become an issue of serious legal battle on money, property, and family trust.
The elderly businessman was called Wang whose surname was Wang and was just leaving the hospital in the Zhongshan District. He sat on a wheelchair and was pushed by his new wife, a 68 year old; Lai. Some of the members of Wang’s family were already waiting outside as they arrived at the entrance of the hospital.
A Chaotic Confrontation
Witnesses claimed that three of the sons of Wang, his wives and children rushed towards the couple. They moved Lai aside and took the wheelchair. A fierce battle was to be fought in the middle of the street. Lai called out in his aid, and endeavored to prevent them, but the family turned Wang away in a moment. She was also said to have been injured in the incident.
Police quickly came to the scene. Wang’s children informed the officers that the old man was their father and they are worried about his safety. Wang eventually departed with the members of his family.
Secret Wedding Revealed
The tension between the pair took place several weeks ago when Wang entered his marriage with Lai secretly on January 5. His children even say that they were only informed about the marriage later when they tried to see him and were denied permission to do so. They assert that Lai isolated him with family members, and he had minimal interaction with the external environment.
Wang reportedly gave Lai and her children seven pieces of land and an insurance policy worth S$3.3million according to local reports. It is estimated that around S$5million of the transferred assets are totaled. The total wealth of Wang is estimated to be in the range of between S$20million and S$23million. He has been known to have a number of properties in Taipei.
The family feels that Wang is in a weak state of mind due to old age. They maintain that he might not have been very familiar with the financial choices he was making. Lai vehemently counters such allegations. She has reported the family to the authorities over cases of coercion and offending others in the street and she has applied to be granted a protection order.
According to the officials of the household registration office, Wang had provided the answers to all the necessary questions with clarity during the time that the marriage was registered. According to Taiwanese laws, individuals who are of legal age are free to get married.
