Muslims gathered at the Central Mosque in Seoul on Thursday for the first congregational prayers marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan.
Footage shows worshippers from across South Korea and other countries, who came together to pray, beginning a month-long period of fasting, reflection and spiritual devotion.
“All Muslims meet here. This is the Seoul Central Mosque. All, every Muslim countries people came here, and they take their Iftar. Everything is very well for our Muslims, and this is very amazing day for all Muslim people,” said Omar, one of the attendees.
“It was really special, actually, we are living here in Korea, staying here alone without family, so we always wait for Ramadan to meet with our friends and people from other countries,” shared Fatima, a devotee.
Siti, a tourist from Singapore, noted it was her first time observing Ramadan overseas. “I would like to do some Taraweeh here, it’s actually been great so far because I’ve never fasted in the winter country before and this is my first time fasting overseas, overall it was a very good experience.”
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer and reflection. From dawn to sunset, adults abstain from food and drink during the month, which commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.
