Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman has officially been sworn in as the country’s new prime minister in Dhaka on Tuesday, following a landslide election victory.
Footage shows President Mohammed Shahabuddin administering the oath to Rahman, who completed the inauguration by signing the Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy. Large crowds are seen gathering at the ceremony, which was held at the South Plaza of the National Parliament building.
The BNP-led alliance won 212 out of 299 seats, with the closest rival, Jamaat-e-Islam, claiming 77 seats and independents securing seven. Voter turnout reached 59.44 percent, a significant rise from the boycotted January 2024 election.
A concurrent constitutional referendum passed with 73 percent support, approving a two-term limit for prime ministers, a bicameral legislature, and enhanced judicial independence.
The 60-year-old will take over from the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who came into power after last year’s mass uprising, which forced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from office, ending her 15-year rule and prompting her to flee the country.
Rahman, son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, is Bangladesh’s first male leader in 35 years and the country’s 11th prime minister.
