117 Homeless After Fire—Johor Government Promises 40 New Houses for Orang Asli

A massive fire in Kampung Orang Asli Teluk Jawa, Johor, on 12 February, destroyed 30 houses and left 117 residents homeless. The Johor government has taken steps to rehabilitate the victims. Authorities said 40 new houses will be built on an Orang Asli reserve near Kuala Masai.

Five acres of coastal land have been identified as suitable for the project. Those concerned hope that the move will bring new hope to the lives of the affected families.

Resettlement Plan

Johor Orang Asli Development Department director Faisal Long said a total of 40 families will be relocated. Of these, 30 families were directly affected by the fire. In addition, 10 more families will be relocated to the same location so that community cohesion is maintained.

The new housing area has been designated for the Seleta community. He said this will facilitate administrative activities and service delivery.

Temporary Shelter System

A plan has also been made to build temporary houses. Work will begin soon after approval is received at the district disaster committee meeting. Authorities said that if approved, the temporary houses could be ready within one to two weeks.

Residents would then be able to move to new locations. The affected people are currently staying in temporary relief centers. The government is continuing to provide them with food and other essential assistance.

Community Welfare

The new housing projects will also help improve access to healthcare and welfare services. At the same time, the relationship between the Orang Asli communities of Teluk Jawa and Kuala Masai will also be strengthened.

Increased administrative coordination will also help accelerate future development activities. Officials hope that this assistance will help the affected people become mentally strong so that they can return to normal life quickly.
