Two Men Detained Over Dismembered Woman Found in Kota Kinabalu Dump

A usually quiet residential area in Kota Kinabalu was turned into a crime scene after workers discovered dismembered human remains at a garbage disposal site in Taman Indah Permai.

What initially appeared to be an isolated and shocking find quickly escalated into a full-scale murder investigation, with police arresting two suspects on the same day.

The incident unfolded early on 12 February at around 6.30am. A garbage collector was emptying bins near a supermarket when part of a human limb reportedly fell from a rubbish bin into his truck. Alarmed by the discovery, he alerted others at the scene, and the police were immediately notified. Officers soon arrived and cordoned off the area.

More Body Parts Discovered

As investigations continued, police uncovered additional human remains at nearby disposal points within the same housing estate. A severed leg was found not far from the initial location.

Officers however found a head and torso at a different disposal site in the same housing estate at about 11:40am. The investigators assume that the body was cut into at least seven parts and then it was packed in plastic bags and disposed of in various locations.

The remains were discovered within a very short distance, which indicated that they were dumped at approximately the same period. The evidence was meticulously gathered by forensic teams and detectives were busy determining the victim. The preliminary evidence showed that the remains represented a Malaysian woman.

Suspects Tracked and Arrested.

One of the witnesses stated that she had seen the victim running out of a house in panic and was drawn back into a house by a man.

In an attempt to help investigate the matter, at approximately 8:10pm, a 71-year old man was arrested at the emergency unit of the Hospital Queen Elizabeth II. At about 10:30pm, a few hours later, a 19-year old man was also arrested at one of the apartments in Taman Seri Maju, Sepanggar. Police think the two men are not independent of the matter.

Some of the items taken during the arrests included mobile phones, clothing, which was thought to have been worn during the event, and a gold Nissan X-Trail vehicle.

In preliminary questioning, the key suspect allegedly confessed of having committed the crime. According to police, it is possible that the motive was a personal relationship dispute and an engagement money argument.

Both suspects are being pursued under Section 302 of the Penal Code in the wrong of killing. Police have affirmed further that investigation is still on and more investigations are being done to finalize the file.
