The drums were heard and the lions in their magnificent colors sprung in the sky. This was not a festival parade and a street celebration. It was a local lion dance contest in Malaysia whereby teams assembled to compete in order to secure the opportunity of making it to the world championships.

As soon as the lions were brought up on high metal poles, the crowd hushed down, and each movement of the lions was followed with open mouths.
Lion dance is an ancient Chinese dance that has been a heritage over a long time. It is said to be good luck, protection and prosperity. Lion dance in Malaysia is also a significant aspect of Lunar New Year and other significant occasions since several cultures coexist here. However, in competitions such as this, the dance is much more intense and exciting.
Dancing Poles over the Crowd
It is a two-actor play in a lion outfit. One of these manages the head whereas the other is the body and the tail. They have to act in unison, reason and breathe in the same breath. They leap over pole to pole in the contest, some of them over a building one story high. A single misstep could be the termination of routine.

The lions do not just jump. They show emotions too. The head shakes away, the eyes blink, and the lion looks sportive, inquisitive or courageous. Balance, timing, expression, and teamwork: The judges are paying attention to them. Every second matters.
A Stage Full of Noise and Colour
The area of performance is vibrant. Drums are rapping, cymbals are clashing, and gongs are striking in the hall. Every sound directs the movement of the lion. The strong lights illuminate the bright colors of the costumes of the lion, and this scene becomes lively and fast-paced.

The teams are located in various parts of the world and have their own style. Others emphasize acute and strong moves. Others have smooth and flowing jumps. Gasps, cheers and applause are heard in the audience as lions safely land on narrow poles.
More Than Just A Performance
To most performers, this contest is the end result of years of practice. Others began learning lion dance at such a tender age. Balance, strength, and trust are things that they use on a daily basis. The level is not an easy one to compete in, and it is a dream of many teams to reach the world championships.
Commenters also mentioned that Malaysia’s lion dance stands out due to its incorporation of acrobatics on poles.

The lions prostrate themselves to the crowd as the last drumbeats are heard. The applause is louder and the atmosphere is exciting. It is not only about viewing a dance when watching this competition. It is like tradition getting up, jumping, and flying in front of your eyes.
