The new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has become the center of discussion for a completely different reason as soon as he set foot in the historic Gracie Mansion in New York City. Instead of major renovations to this 227-year-old government residence, he has focused on everyday and practical changes. In particular, the plan to install a bidet in the bathroom has already caused a stir on social media.

Many say that such a practical idea in such a historic place is really novel. Mamdani moved into Gracie Mansion with his wife, Rama Duaji, on January 12, 2026. Since then, humorous discussions have begun about his personal preferences.
Bidet Revolution in the Bathroom
Mayor Mamdani has made it clear that installing a bidet in the bathroom of Gracie Mansion is a “desirable hope” of his. Although he admits that working with old pipelines will not be easy. Still, he believes that even historic places can become modern with time. He sees this system, common in South Asia and the Middle East, as part of normal living.

As a result, this plan seems quite funny to many but realistic. Many say that this may be the most talked-about bathroom renovation in New York City.
Cat in Gracie Mansion
In addition to the bidet, the mayor also announced the introduction of a cat to Gracie Mansion. He jokingly said that he also has to take allergy medication for this. This comment made him more human to many.

It seems that he wanted to convey that the mayor has a personal life apart from politics. However, he wants to see Gracie Mansion not only as a government residence but also as a livable house.
People’s Mayor’s Thoughts
Mamdani emphasized that Gracie Mansion will be a house for the people. He said that he will use the subway, buses and city bikes as before. According to him, even if the residence changes, the connection with the common people will not change.

He believes that it is possible to remain ordinary even in a place of power. This statement has given a positive message to many.
Netizens’ Reaction
The bidet plan has been met with laughter and jokes on social media. Many have commented that a new era of cleanliness is finally beginning in New York.
Some have said that once you use a bidet, it’s hard to go back to your old habits. Others have linked it to the mayor’s roots and culture.
Overall, a large section of netizens see the initiative as funny yet realistic.
