China’s new giant panda pair Chen Xing and Xiao Yue, landed safely at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Malaysia at 8:30pm on 18 November, Tuesday. They were brought on a 10-year contract as part of the extension of the Malaysia-China Panda Conservation Cooperation Agreement that began in 2014.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability said the arrival symbolized the long-standing cordial relationship between the two countries.

The pandas were taken from the airport to the Giant Panda Conservation Centre in Zoo Negara, where they will undergo a mandatory one-month quarantine. After that, they will be released to the public.

Conservation Cooperation Continues

China and Malaysia launched international panda conservation efforts in 2014. This year, the two countries announced a new decision to continue joint research. This initiative is not only about panda conservation, but also about increasing cooperation between zoologists and researchers from both countries.

The arrival of Chen Xing and Xiao Yue is the latest example of that joint commitment. Authorities also believe that the diplomatic ties between the two countries are getting stronger.

Netizen’s Reaction

Many have commented that the way China has elevated pandas to a special status worldwide is a matter of research. Some say that no matter where the pandas are, they ultimately belong to China.

Many people feel that Malaysia is fortunate and proud to have the opportunity to keep such valuable animals.

Preparations at Zoo Negara

The two pandas have also arrived with Chinese veterinarians and keepers, who will provide special training to Zoo Negara staff on panda care. After quarantine, they will be transferred to a new exhibit.

A special team is engaged in monitoring the normal behavior, diet and health of the two pandas. Authorities hope that the new pair, like the previous panda pair, Xing Xing and Liang Liang, will also attract visitors.

It will also create an opportunity to create awareness about domestic endangered species, including the Malayan sun bear.

Malaysia has welcomed two very ✨ very special✨ visitors — a new pair of giant pandas from China! 🐼 Meet Chen Xing (male) and Xiao Yue (female), the adorable duo who touched down safely at KLIA at 8.30pm on 18 November. The pandas are here thanks to a new agreement signed in April 2025 during the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia. Under the deal, Malaysia will host the young panda pair from 2025 to 2035 as part of the ongoing International Cooperation Project on Giant Panda Conservation. Upon landing, the duo were transported straight to the Giant Panda Conservation Centre at Zoo Negara, which has been newly upgraded to give them the comfiest, safest environment possible.
