The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced longer festive holidays for students in the 2026 academic year. The additional holidays are specifically for Chinese New Year (CNY), Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Diwali.

CNY 2026 falls on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 17 and 18. To mark the occasion, the MOE has granted three additional days of holidays on February 16, 19 and 20. As a result, students will be able to enjoy a nine-day long holiday next year.

Chinese New Year Holidays

The CNY holidays have been included in the first term of the 2026 academic year. General schools will have additional holidays on February 16, 19 and 20. For Group A schools (Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu), these three holidays will be on February 15, 16 and 19.

The long break will give students more time to celebrate with their families and relatives. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan will begin just two days after the start of CNY, which will make the holiday even more special.

Hari Raya Extended Break

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is likely to fall on March 21 and 22 next year. Earlier, the MOE had announced additional holidays on March 19 and 20. However, Group A schools will only get an additional holiday on March 19. The long weekend will give students extra time to celebrate the festival. It will also make it easier for families to travel and prepare.

Extra Day for Diwali

Diwali in 2026 will fall on November 8 and will be replaced by a holiday on November 9. The MOE has also announced another additional holiday on November 10. This will give students a three-day break for Diwali celebrations. Minority Hindu students and families are welcoming the decision. The ministry says its aim is to ensure students’ comfort and cultural participation during the festival.
