- ‘A Journey Through Hue and Imagination’ Inspires Hope and Finds Inspiration in the Unexpected
- 45 ‘Squeeze and Splatter’ Artworks Trace the Doctor’s Journey from Medicine to Business to Art, Reflecting the Pulse of the World and a Quiet Resilience Born of Adversity
The Exhibition: A Journey Through Colour, Motion, and Meaning
Dr. Lowly, an autodidactic artist and originator of the ‘Squeeze and Splatter’ technique, will present his solo art exhibition at ION Art Gallery from 11 to 23 December 2025. Titled ‘A Voyage Through Hue and Imagination’, the exhibition invites viewers into a sanctuary of color, motion, and meaning.

The display features 45 large-scale artworks that trace the doctor’s encounters with nature and the world, infused with emotional echoes shaped by a life of healing, exploration, and transformation.
Birth of a Technique: Control, Chaos, and Discovery
Dr. Lowly’s signature technique was born out of systematic experimentation and fierce innovation. Returning to art in 2021 during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, he instinctively reached for tools closest to his former world – surgical syringes, medical tubing, and other clinical instruments. He also ventured into painting with balloons, plastic sheets, and even a toilet brush in an attempt to unlock spontaneity, but none stirred the visceral joy and freedom he sought. Then, one day, a breakthrough – a method that released energy, freedom, and delight in ways that no other method could. He named it ‘Squeeze and Splatter’.

In ‘Squeeze and Splatter’, paint begins with intention but soon breaks free, engaging the artist in spontaneous dialogue. From flowers to birds, animals, and monuments, Dr. Lowly’s works are bright, dynamic, and evocative, captivating both the eye and the imagination. Each canvas holds a vision, a familiar form, but every splash dances independently: now you see it, now you don’t. These fleeting gestures merge with the viewer’s own emotions and memories to create a compelling one-frame story, thus opening a world of limitless possibilities. Much like his pioneering approach to health tech entrepreneurship – where he altered the medical industry’s inefficient medical claims processes with a then-unheard-of web-based system – Dr. Lowly’s self-devised painting technique carries far-reaching artistic potential, resonating powerfully with global audiences. Dr. Lowly works exclusively with non-toxic acrylic paints, which align with his health beliefs.
A Personal Milestone Rooted in Faith and Giving Back
“‘Squeeze and Splatter’ is my freedom,” muses Dr. Lowly, the artist and creator of the technique. “In the clash between control and chaos, I find truth. Each piece embodies movement, memory, and mystery, shaped by energy, defined by emotion, and revealing itself in layers. I am honored to present 45 of my most poignant pieces at ION Art Gallery this year-end. For me, this exhibition is a deeply personal milestone. May these artworks leave you with a sense of hope, and perhaps, in their colors and motion, you will find the spark to face life’s challenges with fresh inspiration.”

Dr. Lowly adds, “Art allows me to give back and empower underprivileged communities in Asia. As a struggling medical student who had to support myself, I am eternally grateful for the God-given hope and grace that guided my journey to becoming a doctor. With all my heart, I long to help others chase their dreams and soar – to feel held, to feel seen, and to discover the quiet strength that carries us through even the darkest hours.”

Spokesperson Biography
Dr. Low Lee Yong, 62, has traversed adversity to success and art. He is fondly known as Dr. Lowly in the art world.

Growing up in a poor rural family, Dr. Lowly decided early that medicine would enable him to provide a better life for his family. His illiterate parents and Chinese-educated siblings could not guide him. Facing derision from teachers and classmates due to his background and limited command of English, he resorted to memorizing phrases from The Straits Times, Singapore’s national English newspaper. He would reuse these phrases in examinations, and he attended biology lessons after school to better prepare himself for medical school.
His diligence paid off, and he graduated with a medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1987. He aspired to be a surgeon, but severe dizzy spells when standing for long stretches shattered that dream.
Dr. Lowly became a General Practitioner. After running his clinic for 10 years, he realized he was constantly competing with larger medical establishments. He decided to dream big, step out of his comfort zone, and become a health-tech entrepreneur.
In 1994, Dr. Lowly founded MHC Asia Group (Make Health Connect), rallying classmates and friends to build an affiliated medical network serving corporate and insurance clients. As the company grew, so did its challenges. By 1998, during the Asian Financial Crisis, MHC faced S$1.5 million in debt—dealing with disgruntled shareholders, disillusioned doctors, and dissatisfied clients. On the brink of bankruptcy, Dr. Lowly reimagined the business model and envisioned a radical solution: a modern, web-based system to connect clinics and streamline claims processing.
In 1999, he launched a dot-com company backed by a venture capitalist and Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB), determined to build the system from the ground up. He terminated all existing contracts and required doctors to adopt the new digital platform. The gamble paid off. The system worked, and MHC began its turnaround.
In 2017, Dr. Lowly began experiencing recurring dizziness—an unsettling symptom that led to the discovery of a brain aneurysm. For the next two years, he lived under the looming threat of sudden death, carrying what he described as a time bomb within. By 2019, the aneurysm had grown, and a second one emerged. With the risk escalating, Dr. Lowly made the courageous decision to undergo high-risk brain surgery.
He prepared with precision: restructuring his company, appointing a successor, and ultimately selling the 25-year-old business to EQT, a Swedish private equity firm. The surgery was successful, and Dr. Lowly stepped away from the business he had nurtured for decades.
At that point, MHC Asia Group had evolved into a leading health-tech enterprise, boasting a network of 2,000 panel clinics and a digital platform that processed over two million medical claims annually for insurers and corporate clients—saving millions in healthcare costs.
Serendipitously, just as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, Dr. Lowly found himself at home—unable to travel or launch another venture. In that stillness, he returned to his first love: art.
At age eight, Dr. Lowly won an art competition, which sparked a lifelong passion. He was an active member of his school’s Art Club, but poverty redirected his path toward medicine, and art quietly receded for nearly five decades. In 2021, he began painting again and pioneered his signature ‘Squeeze and Splatter’ technique—a dynamic method born of experimentation and emotional release.
Just as he once reimagined health-tech entrepreneurship to build something transformative, Dr. Lowly believes this self-created technique holds immense artistic potential. It resonates deeply with global audiences, bridging emotion, spontaneity, and the universal search for hope.
Dr. Lowly is also the author of two inspirational books—I Dare to Dream and I Dare to Dream Big—which chronicle his personal triumphs over adversity and the challenges of the business world. As a motivational speaker, he engages audiences in educational and corporate settings, sharing insights from his multifaceted journey.
A committed philanthropist, Dr. Lowly draws from his own experience as a struggling, self-supporting medical student. He gives generously to future doctors through three bursaries he established at the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and Duke-NUS Medical School. Beyond Singapore, he empowers underprivileged communities across Asia through Goducate Ltd, a non-governmental organization based in the Philippines.
Over the course of his multifaceted journey, Dr. Lowly has received numerous accolades for his visionary leadership and entrepreneurial spirit. These include the Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2010, jointly presented by the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) and the Rotary Club of Singapore; the Asia Pacific Entrepreneur Award 2012 by Enterprise Asia; and the 8th International Management Action Award 2012, administered by SPRING Singapore and the Chartered Management Institute (UK), recognizing impactful leadership in healthcare.
He was also honored with the Outstanding Leadership CMO Award 2012 by CMO Asia and the Teochew Entrepreneur Award 2016 by Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan.
Dr. Lowly’s art celebrates the fleeting beauty of nature and the quiet resilience of the human spirit. Inspired by the natural world, his paintings seek to capture ephemeral moments—evoking wonder, optimism, and emotional depth. Each work is a vibrant interplay of spontaneity and intention, creating a visual echo of movement and meaning.
His art stands as a testament to perseverance, innovation, and the pursuit of beauty. Through it, Dr. Lowly invites viewers on a visual and emotional journey—to see the world with renewed hope and to find inspiration in the unexpected. Even in times of uncertainty, his work reminds us that the human spirit can transform challenge into grace and chaos into color.
