A 29-year-old caretaker Pushpalata has been arrested for throwing a four-year-old Chihuahua dog ‘Goofy’. It happened in inside an apartment on Kannur Road in Bengaluru, India. The horrific incident on 31 October came to light after CCTV footage went viral.
Goofy’s owner, 23-year-old MBA student Rashika K., had given her the responsibility of looking after two pet dogs. She was paid monthly salary of Rs 22,000 (S$323) and accommodation.

Out Of Anger Or Revenge? Police Suspect
Police said that CCTV footage showed Pushpalata entering the lift and grabbing the small dog by the belt and throwing it hard on the floor, killing Goofy instantly. At first, she misled Rashika by telling her that the pet had fallen to its death after the lift doors opened. But the truth was revealed after watching the footage.

During interrogation, she said that the dog’s incessant barking had angered her. However, the police suspect that she had been warned about the recent theft of a gold chain and two rings from Rashika’s house – which could be a reason for revenge.

Storm Of Anger On Social Media
As soon as the CCTV footage spread on social media, netizens were outraged. Many warned that it is not safe to leave anyone’s responsibility – be it children, elderly members or pets – to a stranger or an untrained person.

Some commented that many people consider pets to be annoying burdens and do not behave responsibly.

Many others have called for stricter legislation, saying that punishment for such cruelty to small and weak animals should be harsher.

Case On Multiple Charges, Autopsy To Be Conducted
A case has been filed against Pushpalat under multiple sections including the Animal Cruelty Act, theft and cheating. Preparations are underway to exhume the body and conduct an autopsy to confirm the exact cause of the dog’s death. Authorities say that they are investigating how planned the entire incident was and whether it has any connection with the theft charges.
