Giving Senior and Disabled Dogs a Fighting Chance
Running a dog shelter is no easy feat — and for Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), the challenge goes far beyond rescuing strays. The non-profit organisation also provides palliative and end-of-life care to elderly, disabled, and terminally ill dogs at its halfway home in the Klang Valley.

MDDB’s Veterinary Care Coordinator, Kavitah Ganasan, said to FMT the organisation’s main struggle lies in securing adequate funds to cover its mounting veterinary expenses. She added that the shelter has already racked up nearly RM150,000 in medical bills and remains deeply thankful to the clinic for continuing to care for their dogs with such compassion.
A Sale With Heart
To help pay off the growing bills, MDDB has launched a new monthly fundraising initiative — a preloved and new item sale series — featuring clothes, crockery, shoes, handbags, and decorative pieces. Their first sale takes place this weekend 15-16 November, at No.17, Jalan SS3/46, SS3, Petaling Jaya, from 11am to 7pm.

This weekend’s theme focuses on women’s fashion, with pieces ranging from RM20 to RM120. Expect a variety of styles — from gowns, sarees, kurtis, and cheongsams to dresses, blouses, and even winter coats.
“We’ve noticed that people are now more open to wearing preloved clothes, and there’s a big market for it,” Kavitah said. “The items we received are high-quality and in great condition,” some are even brand new.
Helping Dogs Live Their Final Days In Comfort
MDDB operates two shelters: one in Rawang for healthy rescues, and another in Klang Valley for about 70 senior or disabled dogs, including those that are blind or three-legged from road accidents. A few also have neurological or mental health conditions requiring ongoing care.

“All our ill dogs were picked up from the streets, where many were bullied by other dogs,” Kavitah shared. Each dog receives love, medical attention, and dignity until their final days. When suffering becomes unbearable, a visiting vet assists with humane euthanasia.
“We believe every dog deserves a chance,” she added. “We only put them to sleep if they’ve completely given up and are beyond pain relief.”
Where Kindness Meets Sustainability
The sale is part of MDDB’s effort to make fundraising more sustainable while encouraging mindful consumption. Visitors can shop guilt-free knowing every purchase directly supports the shelter’s veterinary costs and ongoing rescue work.
So, if you are in Petaling Jaya this weekend, drop by the sale — pick up something stylish, and help give these dogs the comfort they deserve.
