Malaysia Rolls Out RV Rentals from 2026: New Horizons in Tourism

Recreational vehicle (RV) rentals are finally going to be legal in Malaysia from 2026. Until now, RVs were only allowed for personal use, but commercial rentals were prohibited.

If the new policy comes into effect, there will be a big change in the country’s tourism sector, where travel and accommodation experiences will be combined—like a walking “hotel on wheels.”

The government’s new policy has potential for the tourism sector

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that RV rental and commercial use licenses will be issued from January 1, 2026.

Under this policy, they can be used as “Self-Drive Tourist Hire Vehicle” in the Malay Peninsula and “Self-Drive Hire Car” in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

However, there is a condition—only newly built (CKD or CBU) RVs will get this opportunity. To be used for rental, a previously registered RV must be no older than 15 years and must pass a technical inspection prescribed by JPJ.

Single system for licensing and safety

The Ministry of Transport and Tourism is jointly planning to launch a ‘single window’ system, through which RV businesses can be approved in one go. “This process will ensure the safety of renters and bring transparency in regulation,” the minister said.

However, he also mentioned that the government will intensify its crackdown on illegal transport activities, especially at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, where there will be special surveillance to prevent touts and illegal rental car activities.

Public opinion: excitement, interest, and concern

The announcement has created a huge stir on social media. While many expressed excitement, some users have highlighted the real problems. Some have raised questions regarding license-

While others raised concerns about safety and response capabilities.

However, experts say the decision could open a new chapter for tourism in Malaysia. Consequently, they are expecting that it could enhance logistics, create jobs, and boost local business.

But the right infrastructure, secure campsites, and effective surveillance are needed to make the “hotel on wheels” dream a reality that is safe and sustainable.
