Viral Video Captures Heated Confrontation

A 54-year-old security guard, R. Chandran, died of a heart attack just hours after he was allegedly assaulted by a male tenant at the Menara Megah condominium in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, 13 October.

A viral video shows a man angrily berating, kicking, and shoving the guard, who remained seated at his post and tried to calm the situation. The incident, which took place around 5 a.m., has since sparked public outrage online.

According to Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari, the tenant had approached Chandran asking him to escort him to another block, claiming he had forgotten his access card. However, the guard refused as he was not allowed to leave his station unattended.

“The suspect then became aggressive, slapping the victim’s left cheek, punching his forehead, and stepping on his body and legs,” said Ahmad Sukarno in a statement.

Received Treatment, Then Found Dead Hours Later

After the confrontation, Chandran lodged a police report and sought medical attention at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), where doctors found soft tissue injuries to his head. He was discharged later that morning.

That same night, at around 9.30 p.m., his wife found him unconscious at home in Jalan Ipoh. Paramedics later confirmed that he had died.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the cause of death was a heart attack. Police are now awaiting a full pathology report to determine whether the assault contributed to his death.

Suspect Arrested, Firearm Investigation Underway

Police arrested the 32-year-old suspect, believed to be a tenant at the condominium, at 4.30 p.m. the same day. They remanded him for four days to assist investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt) and Section 36 of the Arms Act 1960 (possession of imitation firearms).

Witnesses claimed that the attacker was holding what appeared to be a pistol during the altercation. One of Chandran’s colleagues, identified only as Jack, said he rushed down from another floor after hearing the commotion.

“When I got downstairs, they were already struggling. I tried to break up the fight, but the suspect got more aggressive. It looked like he was holding a pistol — everyone panicked,” he said.

Family Demands Answers, Calls for Transparency

Chandran’s eldest son, Murugan, 28, said the family was shocked to learn that the case also involved an arms-related charge.

“My father told people that the man who assaulted him had used a gun to threaten him. Witnesses said the same,” Murugan told reporters. “Now they’re saying it’s an imitation firearm. We just want the truth to be told.”

He shared that Chandran had taken leave to spend Deepavali with his wife, M. Tamilselvi, and their two sons.

“Two days before the incident, we had a video call. He looked cheerful and excited to celebrate Deepavali with us. I never thought that would be our last conversation,” Murugan said.

Community Pays Tribute to the Fallen Guard

Colleagues remembered Chandran as a dedicated and disciplined guard who took his duties seriously.

“He always made sure the residents were safe,” said one coworker. “He was friendly, but firm when it came to work. This is a heartbreaking loss for all of us.”

The Menara Megah incident has reignited discussion about workplace safety for security personnel and tenant aggression in residential properties. Police investigations are ongoing as Chandran’s family continues to seek justice.
