According to the government data released on Japan’s annual elderly holiday, Japan has now recorded nearly 100,000 people whose age is 100 or older.
It introduces the 55th consecutive year where centenarians have made another new record.
Men VS Women
Of the 100,000 centenarians, 90 percent are women. This reflects a global pattern in which women outlive men.

The oldest living person in Japan is a woman—114-year-old Shigeko Kagawa—and the oldest man, Kiyotaka Mizuno, is 111 years old.
Shigeko Kagawa’s Secret
Shigeko Kagawa, who is the oldest woman in Japan, She has stated, “Walking a lot while talking at home strengthens my legs, which is the source of my current vitality.”

According to a report, Shigeko actively served as an obstetrician-gynecologist and general practitioner well into her 80s.
Her eyesight still works well. Most of the time, she spends her days watching TV, reading newspapers, and doing calligraphy.
The Rise of Japan’s Centenarians
These centenarians, who are counted as super seniors of Japan, have lived through history for more than a century, and their continued vitality is truly inspiring.

It used to be beyond imagination just a few decades ago—reaching the age of 100—but now thousands of people in Japan are hitting this milestone every year, and celebrating it.

These increases of centenarians show both medical advances and cultural practices. It’s success is linked to community, family support, and healthy living.

However, this new announcement made some people worry about the challenges for Japan’s aging society.
A video on TikTok featured this news, but some thought it wasn’t a good thing, as it would increase the demand for healthcare services, pension sustainability, and workforce pressure.
