Attempt at One Shop, Theft at Another
On September 11, 2025, around 4:30 PM, a 30-year-old man named Tao entered a gold shop on the third floor of a shopping mall in Udon Thani, not out of greed but hoping to get caught and return to prison.
According to คลิปเด็ด ข่าวร้อน on Facebook, he even asked the staff whether he would be arrested if he walked out with it. The staff told him he certainly would. Tao eventually returned the ring and left without taking anything.
Minutes later, he entered a second gold shop nearby in the same mall. This time, he put on a gold ring and tried to walk out.

Shop staff quickly chased and restrained him, recovering the ring, while CCTV captured the entire incident until police arrived.
Police then took Tao to the first-floor police operations center for questioning.

His Reason: Prison Felt Easier
During questioning, Tao said he wanted to be sent back to prison because life outside felt overwhelming, The Thaiger reported.
Tao was struggling with a motorbike debt of about 10,000 baht (approx. S$402) and felt frustrated that his mother planned to pass her land to his child instead of him.
He further stated that his mother frequently criticised him for his shortcomings, pointing out that he had not succeeded in supporting himself, and he also felt unsuccessful in many areas of his life, including supporting his family

According to Khaosod, he had previously served prison time for theft in Chonburi and found life behind bars easier than the struggles outside.
His Wife’s Heartbreak
Not long after the arrest, Tao’s 27-year-old wife rushed to the police station carrying their three-year-old child.
According to reports, she tearfully asked him, “Don’t you feel sorry for our child? Who will support us if you do this?”

She later revealed that earlier in the day, Tao had spoken about “wanting to die” or robbing a shop. She thought he was joking until she received a call from the police.
Drugs and Regret
He also admitted to using methamphetamine, one to two pills daily, usually to cope with stress or sober up after drinking alcohol.

He apologised to his mother and wife, telling officers he was not a good person but promised to change if given another chance.
Police Response and Rehabilitation
Following this, authorities confirmed Tao had no intent to commit violent theft, and since both shops recovered the ring and did not press charges, he was not formally charged with theft.
Police charged Tao only with drug use, recorded his details, and arranged for him to undergo rehabilitation, aiming to prevent future offences.
