Six Years of Highway Sightings

Six years after first sightings of a Formula 1-style car tearing down Czech highways, police have finally caught the elusive “phantom driver” who evaded capture by always keeping his helmet on.

The mystery began in 2019, when videos surfaced of a scarlet racing car streaking across Czech motorways. The driver, fully suited in racing gear and a helmet, became a viral figure while continually slipping past authorities. Because of the helmet, police struggled to confirm who was behind the wheel.

Dramatic Arrest in Buk

The chase ended on Sunday morning when officers received reports of the red car at a petrol station near Dobříš. Acting on the tip, several patrol cars and a helicopter moved in on a property in Buk, about 60 kilometers southwest of Prague.

There, police found a 51-year-old man sitting inside the racing car in front of his garage. He initially refused to leave, accusing officers of trespassing, but was eventually taken into custody. Footage shared by local media showed him arguing with police while still in his racing gear.

Police and Family Disagree

Czech police later confirmed on X that the driver was identified and brought in for questioning. They said he refused to comment. Authorities have now launched administrative proceedings that could lead to a hefty fine and a driving ban.

The man’s son, Lukas, criticized the police action as excessive. “They entered our private land and violated our rights. It was completely unnecessary and illegal,” he told local reporters. He denied any link between his father and the car seen speeding that day, though both father and son run a YouTube channel called TrackZone, which regularly posts videos of the vehicle.

Ferrari Look or Something Else?

While the car has often been described as a Ferrari Formula 1 machine, motorsport experts say it is actually a Dallara GP2/08 — a car built for the GP2 Series, a feeder competition for Formula One. Regardless, such cars are illegal on public roads as they lack plates, lights, and other required safety equipment.

The driver’s arrest brings an end to a saga that blurred the line between internet folklore and law enforcement headache. For six years, the phantom racer was a legend of Czech highways. Now, his next challenge may come in court, not on the road.

A car mimicking a Formula One racer has been spotted in the Czech Republic. Local police later arrested the driver, issuing a fine and a driving ban for several offences. The vehicle, nicknamed “Phantom of the Highways”, was seen in the convoy with supercars including a Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 and Chevrolet Corvette. #f1 #formula1 #formulaone #supercar #hypercar
