A Taste of South East Asia in Sweden

South East Asian food has long been loved for its bold flavours, but one dessert in particular left such an impression on a Swedish traveller that he decided to bring it back home.

According to reports, the man first tried ice kachang/ais kacang, also known as ABC (Ais Batu Campur or mixed iced) while in Malaysia, and instantly fell in love with the refreshing shaved ice dessert.

Determined to share the experience with others, he purchased a traditional ice-shaving machine from Malaysia and transported it to Sweden.

From Holiday Discovery to Summer Business

Once back in Stockholm, the man set up a mobile stall to serve ais kacang during Sweden’s hot summer. His stall was styled as a bicycle cart, complete with a dark green umbrella and traditional equipment to shave ice on the spot.

The stall, cheekily named the Lean Green Ais Kacang Machine, offers bowls of shaved ice topped with sweet red beans, corn, jellies, rose syrup, and either condensed milk or coconut milk.

Each serving is priced at 60 SEK (around RM28), which is roughly S$8.

Nostalgic Treat for Southeast Asians Abroad

For Malaysians and Singaporeans living in Sweden, stumbling upon this cart is a nostalgic experience.

The Swedish seller usually operates at tourist hotspots in central Stockholm, such as Gamla Stan and Slussen, where locals and visitors alike stop to cool down with a bowl of ice kachang.

The dessert, often described as a refreshing mix of textures and flavours, combines shaved ice with a medley of toppings, from red beans and sweet corn to grass jelly and syrups.

For Southeast Asians abroad, it offers more than just a sweet treat; it is a taste of home.

Netizens Share Their Reactions

The viral video of the stall, first shared on TikTok by user @/wawawandering, quickly caught attention online. Many who saw it were amused and impressed by the effort.

One commenter wrote, “This is rare. Even in Malaysia, you don’t really see anyone selling ABC from a bicycle anymore.”

Another cheered him on with, “Wowwww.. wayy to gooo brothaa keep going.”

Others pointed out the charm of the setup, with one saying, “Using a manual machine—legendary.”

And of course, some recognised the business potential: “Bro gotta be making bucks during summer.”

A Cool Taste of Home Abroad

Whether you call it ais kacang or ABC, this shaved ice dessert holds a special place in Malaysian and Singaporean culture.

Now, thanks to one Swedish man’s passion, it has found a new home thousands of kilometres away, cooling down locals in Stockholm while bringing a comforting taste of Southeast Asia to those abroad.
