On 4 September, in Japan’s Ashikaga, Togichi, police arrested a 29-year-old unemployed man after he allegedly tried to sell stolen tires.

The thief attempted to resell the tires at the very shop where the victim had bought them only days earlier.
Theft Reported in May
As reported by Shimotsuke, Ashikaga police said that the suspect has been accused of stealing four tires. The tries, in total, are worth about 60,000 yen (approximately S$520).
Somewhere between the afternoon of 13 and 15 May, the thief stole the tires from the property of a 64-year-old company employee. He admitted to his crime during questioning.
Discovery at Second-Hand Shop
The report also states that, police stated, the victim had purchased the tires in mid-May from a used goods shop located just outside of Tochigi Prefecture. However, days later, the suspect brought the same stolen tires to the store in an attempt to resell them

A clerk at the store recognised the tires as being the same ones the victim had purchased days before, and grew suspicious. This led to the clerk making a phone call to the buyer, allowing the theft to be uncovered and reported to the police.
Swift Identification and Arrest
Despite the suspect and victim not having any prior connection, the police were able to quickly identify the man. After a thorough and careful investigation, officers took the man into custody on 4 September.

Authorities said the case highlights the attentiveness of the store staff, whose recognition and timely action helped resolve the theft.
Netizens React
Users questioned why the man would risk his future for such a theft.
Others questioned different aspects of the incident.
While the theft was foiled due to the thief’s own oversight, the story remains as proof of what vigilance and a keen eye can spot.
