Man fled after realising wife was dead
A 20-year-old man was arrested on 24 July, Thursday, for allegedly murdering his pregnant wife at their rented home in Bengaluru. He was reportedly living beside her decomposing body for two days before fleeing. The body of 22-year-old Sumana was discovered on Wednesday afternoon, July 23, after neighbours reported a foul smell coming from the couple’s residence.
After five years of dating, the accused, Shivam Sahane, a painter from Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar area, married Sumana six months ago. According to reports, the pair had been in Bengaluru for five months against the desires of both families.
Couple fought night before woman’s death
According to police, the couple frequently argued, often triggered by Shivam’s alcohol use and suspicions of infidelity. According to reports, Shivam assaulted Sumana physically during their altercation on the evening of Monday, July 21.
The next morning, Shivam attempted to wake her. When she did not respond, he assumed she was asleep, cooked food, ate, and left for work. He returned that night, drank alcohol, and had dinner — again without checking on her.
By Wednesday morning, Shivam realised Sumana was dead and fled the house, according to investigators. He was arrested the following afternoon after the landlord alerted authorities.
Body found with signs of bleeding
Sumana’s decomposing body was discovered in the bedroom by the police when they arrived at the residence. There were no visible injuries, but bleeding from her nose was noted. Officers suspect she may have died from internal trauma caused by the alleged assault. The exact cause of death will be confirmed through post-mortem results, which are pending.
The scene also included empty liquor cartons and leftover food, indicating Shivam had remained in the house for at least two days after her death. Investigators said he even cooked egg bhurji and consumed alcohol near the body before fleeing.
Case registered under murder statute
Shivam has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 103(1), which covers murder. Police say they are still questioning the accused and investigating whether there was any intent to kill or an attempt to cover up the crime.
While the absence of external injuries complicates immediate conclusions, officers believe a pattern of domestic violence and mistrust preceded the incident. Sumana was three months pregnant at the time of her death.
Authorities are awaiting forensic and medical reports to determine the full sequence of events.
