A 62-year-old woman in Nantong, Jiangsu, China, took legal action against a market after slipping on an onion slice and suffering multiple injuries.
She demanded 200,000 yuan (approx. 37,000 SGD) in compensation.
Fall at Market Led to Severe Injuries
The woman had just picked up her granddaughter from school before stopping at the market to buy groceries.

According to reports, while walking through the aisles, she stepped on a slippery object and fell, sustaining a distal radius fracture in her right arm, dental injuries, and wrist joint dysfunction.

Her granddaughter quickly called the police for assistance.
Market Defends Itself, Blames Woman
The market, however, argued that they had taken proper safety precautions, including placing caution signs at the entrance, installing anti-slip tiles, and making safety announcements.

Cleaning staff were also on duty to maintain hygiene.
Furthermore, the market claimed that the woman was wearing high-heeled slippers and had not been paying attention to her surroundings, suggesting that her recklessness contributed to the accident.
Court Rules Market at Fault
During the court hearing, although the market had safety measures in place, the specific area where the woman fell had not been properly cleaned.

Surveillance footage showed that the cleaning staff had been working just ten minutes before the incident, yet the onion slice was still present.
The court determined that the market’s cleaning practices contributed to the woman’s fall. As a result, the market was held responsible for the accident.
