Bangkok is set to make history on January 23, 2025, as Thailand’s Marriage Equality Law officially takes effect, allowing same-sex couples to register their marriages and tie the knot legally.
A Milestone Event
Approximately 300 same-sex couples are expected to marry in Bangkok on the historic day, with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) preparing for a smooth registration process.
Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon has been actively overseeing the arrangements, ensuring that district offices are fully equipped to handle the registrations and assist couples through the process.
Streamlined Registration
To expedite the registration process, couples are encouraged to complete online forms in advance.
According to Bangkok Post, as of now, over 100 couples have pre-registered, with 67 choosing to marry at a special ceremony hosted at the Siam Paragon shopping complex.
The remaining couples will complete their registration at various district offices throughout the city.
Bang Rak, famously known as “Love Hamlet,” and Pathumwan district will host special activities to celebrate the momentous occasion, adding a festive touch to the event.
Legal Reforms and Rights
The new law replaces gender-specific terms such as “husband” and “wife” with the inclusive term “spouse” in official documents, The Thaiger reported.
For Thai nationals marrying foreign partners, legal recognition will only apply within Thailand if the foreign partner’s country does not recognize same-sex marriage.
A Historic Shift for Thailand
Endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn and published in the Royal Gazette on September 24, 2024, the Marriage Equality Law marks a significant advancement in LGBTQ rights in Thailand.
The new law reflects the country’s growing commitment to equality and social acceptance of gender diversity.
