The anticipated film, entitled 后港Hougang: The Documentary was publicly launched on 3 November 2024 in commemoration of The Workers’ Party’s 67th anniversary.
The documentary, which commenced production in 2021, will be published on the party’s official YouTube page upon the film’s recent post-production completion.
The film provides a compelling narrative of Hougang’s evolution through the voices of its residents, both past and present, featuring insights from historians, politicians, academics, and grassroots volunteers.
“The Hougang spirit is produced by shared memories, shared experiences and shared heritage, coming out of a people within a specific historical context at a specific geographical location,” commented historian Bryan Goh, in the film’s trailer.
Lee Li Lian, Deputy Head of the party’s media team, stated that “In many ways, this film captures not just the story of Hougang, but also the spirit that defines this community. The journey of Hougang’s Teochew immigrants echoes the broader Singapore story—one of resilience, courage, and the kampung spirit that binds us together.”
The documentary, presented in six chapters, progressed from the history of Au Kang and the building of the present-day heartlands, ending off with the story of the Hougang Constituency Education Trust, a community initiative established that gives out annual bursaries to children from needy families, embodying the spirit of Hougang and its residents.
The film is told in English, Mandarin, Teochew, and Hokkien.
