A recent medical emergency in Malaysia involving 10 young men has left many shocked and deeply concerned. These individuals, aged 19 to 20, had to undergo a partial amputation of their genitals after injecting a sexual enhancement drug known as ‘ubat kuat’ directly into their private parts.
The procedure, which was intended to improve their performance, instead resulted in severe tissue damage, known medically as penile necrosis.
What is ‘Ubat Kuat’ and Penile Necrosis?
‘Ubat kuat,’ commonly referred to in Malaysia, is a term used for various sexual enhancement products that are typically marketed as performance boosters.
Many people turn to these drugs to improve sexual stamina, but using these substances without medical advice can lead to dangerous side effects, as seen in this case.
According to Pub Med Central, penile necrosis is a rare condition where the tissue of the penis starts to die due to a lack of blood flow. It often happens because of a condition called calciphylaxis, which causes the small and medium-sized arteries to harden and get blocked.
This blockage leads to poor blood circulation, causing the skin and surrounding tissue to die off.
What Went Wrong?
Necrosis occurs when tissue cells die due to illness, injury, infection, or lack of blood flow. In this case, the ‘ubat kuat’ injection caused extensive tissue damage, turning half of the affected area black.
By the time they sought medical attention at a hospital’s emergency department, it was too late to salvage the affected tissue, and the men were left with no option but to have the necrotic portions surgically removed.
Misguided Motivations and the Role of Peer Influence
When questioned about the motivation behind this dangerous practice, one of the youths mentioned that friends had encouraged them to try injecting the drug, claiming it would prolong their sexual performance.
Additionally, none of the youths had consulted a healthcare professional before injecting the substance, indicating a lack of awareness about the potential risks.
The Medical Community’s Response
Healthcare professionals have been vocal in condemning the actions taken by these teenagers, stressing the importance of seeking proper medical advice when considering performance-enhancing treatments.
Misusing unregulated drugs or substances can result in irreversible damage, as demonstrated by this incident.
A nurse who shared the story on social media expressed disbelief and concern, stating, “These boys are still young and not even married. Now, they have had to undergo amputation. Who knows what kind of long-term impact this will have on their lives?”
Lessons and Warnings for Others
Although the teenagers’ genitals still function to some extent after the amputation, their experience remains a cautionary tale for others. It is crucial to understand that substances, especially those intended for medical or sexual use, can be dangerous if not used correctly.
It is recommended that individuals seeking to enhance their sexual health or performance consult a qualified medical professional rather than resort to dangerous methods or follow unverified advice from peers.
