On 3 October 2024, a family found their 15-year-old from Trinidad & Tobago deceased in his Princes Town home. The community is mourning the tragic death of Jayden Alex Lalchan, a student who died by suicide following months of alleged bullying by his peers.
The heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage and calls for stronger action against bullying in schools. Jayden’s devastated family, particularly his mother, has spoken publicly about the ordeal, hoping to raise awareness and prevent future tragedies.
Mother’s Heartfelt Plea for Action
In an emotional interview with Trinidad Express, Jayden’s mother, Fareeda Lalchan, opened up about the pain of losing her son. She revealed that bullies had harassed him for months, despite her repeated efforts to resolve the issue. According to Fareeda, the bullying became unbearable for Jayden, contributing to his tragic decision to take his own life.
“In school, nothing is being done,” she said tearfully. “When the students complain about it, it’s just being brushed aside. They’re not taking full steps to prevent anything from happening.”
“The dean promised me nothing is going to happen to my son,” Fareeda recalled. The dean reportedly assured her that she would call in the parents of one of the bullies, to no avail.
She stated that the school did nothing to address the bullying, despite her complaints to the administration.
‘The school is not holding accountability for his death,’ Fareeda added.
School’s Response
Jayden attended a local school in Trinidad & Tobago, which has since responded to the tragedy with a statement expressing condolences to his family.
“It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that we extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends, and teachers of Jayden Lalchan,” the school stated. “While we may never fully understand the depth of the struggles he faced, we are committed to ensuring that no voice goes unheard, and that no one ever feels alone.”
The administration has yet to take action against the bullies.
Students and Community Respond
In the days following Jayden’s death, the school community rallied together to honour his life and address the issue of bullying.
Students organised a march in tribute to Jayden.
The community held a candlelit vigil in honour of his memory.
A Call for Change: Preventing Future Tragedies
Jayden Lalchan’s death has cast a harsh spotlight on the issue of bullying in schools across Trinidad & Tobago. Parents, educators, and community members are calling for more comprehensive anti-bullying measures and mental health support in schools to prevent future tragedies. The incident has sparked discussions on the responsibility of schools to ensure that students feel safe and supported in their learning environments.
As the investigation into Jayden’s death continues, there is hope that his story will lead to meaningful change, ensuring that no other student suffers in silence due to bullying.
