A TikTok video has gone viral recently, revealing a distressing situation where a Malaysian woman discovered that termites had eaten through her savings. The clip, posted by her daughter, shows a pile of damaged banknotes scattered on the floor, showcasing the significant destruction caused by the pests.
Extent of the Damage
In the video, the termites primarily targeted the higher-value RM50 notes, leaving them in tatters with holes and torn edges. Interestingly, the lower-value RM1 and RM5 notes were mostly unaffected.
Background of the Savings
According to The Star, the woman’s daughter, who shared the video, explained that the money had been stored in the same place for years without any problems. It was particularly heartbreaking for her to see the RM50 notes, which made up a significant portion of the savings, being the most damaged.
Public Reaction
The video quickly gained widespread attention, with 9.9 million views and a total of 17.9k users offering advice in the comment section. Some suggested that the woman’s mother should take the damaged notes to the bank for possible exchange, as long as the serial numbers were still visible.
“You can exchange it at the bank. I have experience keeping money in a bamboo container, and it was even worse than this. It was savings for my wedding. The important thing is to have the serial numbers.”
“Go ahead and exchange it at the bank. They can still accept it. I exchanged damaged money at the bank recently and it was fine.”
While another shared a similar experience. “My brother’s RM20,000 was consumed by termites. It is quite disheartening.”
