There are certain characteristics for a dish of fried carrot cake to be labeled shiok, and they come in both black and white forms. The black, sweet variant is moist and laced with a wok hei scent, while the white version has a crisp exterior with a soft and fluffy interior.
Of course, the presentation and balance of the eggs and chye poh play a role as well. With many stalls out there selling this simple but skillful dish, these are some of the places I recommend that are worth checking out.
Fu Ming Cooked Food
Fu Ming Cooked Food would be my favourite carrot cake stall of all time if I had to pick one. Their Black and White Carrot Cake are both delicious. In the white variety, the size of the radish cakes varies; the larger portions are fluffy, while the smaller bits are crispy. The stall owner coats the black version twice with dark sweet sauce, giving it a gleaming sheen and a honey-ish flavour.

Good Spice Carrot Cake
Carrot cake from Good Spice is so popular that it’s generally sold out by lunchtime. The stall owner, who sells both black and white carrot cake, fires up each dish as soon as you place your order, guaranteeing that your carrot cake arrives hot and fresh. There’s no reason not to get your hands on these delicious dishes of black and white bliss in our opinion.

Lagoon Carrot Cake
Lagoon Carrot Cake sells an option with both the Black and White Carrot Cake on the same plate, which is convenient for individuals who can’t pick. You can also get a substantial plate of fried carrot cakes with crunchy shrimp!
The white carrot cake’s radish cakes are big, even, and firm, and they’re encased in a considerable amount of fried eggs. The black carrot cake, on the other hand, is not overly sweet and does not dominate its savory white cousin.

Hock Soon Carrot Cake
Both black and white carrot cake are available at Hock Soon Carrot Cake. The Black Carrot Cake is soft and fried, with just enough sweet soy sauce to make a flavourful but not overly salty dish. Their White Carrot Cake on the other hand, isn’t overly oily. When it comes to whipping up a dish of White Carrot Cake for their clients, Hock Soon Carrot Cake is quite liberal with their eggs and chye poh.
Address: 20 Ghim Moh Rd, #01-29, Singapore 270020
Opening Hours: Mon (6am to 12pm) | Tues – Sun (6am to 7pm)
Unforgettable Carrot Cake
Unforgettable Carrot Cake, according to some fans, lives up to its moniker. The carrot cake served here used to include housemade kway and was priced between $3 and $5. Even though they no longer do so, milled rice is still used in the batter to keep the kway pieces supple and bitey. Before frying, the pieces are also marinated. Choose from black, white, or mixed beans, and don’t forget to add the chilli for an extra kick!
Address: 115 Bukit Merah View, #01-30, Singapore 115115
You should certainly try these few stalls if you are in the area. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the sweet black carrot cake or the savoury white variety, I strongly advise you to share the calories with your friends.
