A man in Philippines recently pushed the boundaries by remotely piloting a device in Singapore while being in another country.
In a TikTok video, the man is seen maneuvering his robot to order bubble tea from a Marina Bay Sands (MBS) stall. Despite encountering some obstacles during its journey, the robot ultimately succeeded in its task with the help of some friendly individuals along the way. The impressive capabilities of the robot left a lasting impression on the staff and others who witnessed its operation.
Robot Approaches the bubble tea store
The TikTok video begins with a remotely operated robot driving itself towards the automatic doors of MBS, but it encounters its first obstacle as the doors fail to open.Undeterred, the robot proceeds to follow a person entering the mall, successfully entering MBS in the process.
Confidently making its way to the HEYTEA outlet, the robot approached the front counter where a voice from a speaker greeted the staff with a “Hello.” However, the robot was met with silence as no one seemed to pay any attention.
Kind Stranger to the rescue
After a while, one of the staff members at the shop finally noticed the robot and tried to listen to its message, but couldn’t understand it. Another kind individual came to the rescue and leaned in to communicate with the robot. He asked, “What are you saying?” and the robot expressed its order for bubble tea. The man then asked if that was everything the robot wanted to order.
The robot then informed the man that it had cash in its basket, prompting the man to hand the wallet over to the staff for payment.
The kind man then proceeded to put the wallet as well as receipt back into the basket.
In another scene from the video, the robot is seen behaving like any other customer, inquiring about the order.
The man who had placed the order before the robot made sure to inform it of its queue number before leaving with his own bubble tea.
Despite the unusual situation, the staff member did not show any signs of discomfort as she finally handed the robot its bubble tea order. Carrying its cup of boba in the basket, the robot made its way out of the mall, once again following the footsteps of others to exiting MBS.
The video ends with a woman in front of the robot complimenting it on its coolness, providing the robot with one last moment of recognition.
Responses from the video
When the video was posted on Tiktok, it garnered many views and comments on such an activity. One user stated that he has toop much trust for doing this and many others commented that Singapore is pretty much the safest country to be doing this in.
Commenters on Reddit also mentioned how grab delivery riders would be able to make use of such technology as well.
This instance highlights the increasing use of robotics technology in everyday life and its potential to make tasks more convenient. It is not clear how the robot was controlled, but its successful navigation through a busy area to buy bubble tea showcases its impressive capabilities.
