In an unexpected turn of events, a recent engineering class at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore saw only 7 students present in a class that had 350 students enrolled. This unprecedented absence of students has raised concerns about the reasons behind it.

@m_yahya_h recently shared a photo on Tiktok of a large lecture hall, showing only 7 students present for a heat transfer lecture. This was in contrast the 350 students enrolled for the class which highlights a significant drop in attendance.

The COVID-19 pandemic has a profound impact on the education system, with many institutions turning to recorded lectures as a means of providing remote learning. As a result, students have become accustomed to attending lectures online, rather than in person.

Responses to the video

I dk which is worse, having no one turn up for the lecture, or have close to a full house but no one is paying attention…

@Jarmix commented stating that he is unsure which scenario is more undesirable – delivering a lecture to an empty room or addressing an audience with almost every seat occupied but without anyone actively listening.

Well when you post the notes and lectures online there’s no reason to go to class

Whereas, @Bossbart commented that when you have access to the notes and lectures online, it may seem like there is no reason for you to attend class.

According to some electrical engineering students, watching recorded lectures can be more convenient than attending in-person classes. They suggest that lectures where the instructor simply reads off the slides can feel pointless and unengaging.

if youre in electrical eng honestly me and my friends just watch recorded lectures lmao no point in going if lecturer just gonna read off slides

During a personal conversation with a friend, I asked about the specifics of a certain course module, and they mentioned that Heat Transfer is considered one of the most challenging modules in the program. As a result, many students choose not to attend classes because they struggle to keep up with the material.

While this has provided greater flexibility and convenience for many students, it has also raised concerns about the quality of education and the level of student engagement.

Recorded lectures have become an integral part of the educational landscape, and many institutions have been exploring ways to improve the student experience and ensure that students receive a high-quality education, whether they are attending lectures in person or online.

The use of recorded lectures in this situation has highlighted a significant decrease in attendance, which can be disheartening. The availability of recorded lectures has resulted in a lower physical turnout for classes.
